They are nutritious cooked or raw, a friend to soups and a comforting side dish on chilly fall or winter evenings. This little house where Martha Dunn Corey and her sons lived in Pacific Beach is still standing. And on the opposite corner another great grandmother's house still stands, where Margaret and Joe Richert and their family lived. Martha Corey's son Fred married Margaret Richtert's daughter Ruth and they lived happily ever after.
Versions of Jacks date back to ancient cultures. As children in the 1950s (not quite ancient times) Jacks was a game my brother and I and
our friends had fun playing. The occasional fresh game of
Jacks was a welcome surprise in our Christmas stockings.
Jacks is part a series of retro art pieces I am looking forward to working on in the coming year.

Here's the inspiration ad image. Part of the fun of re-imagining objects is deciding
how to represent them in a way that is understandable but different; how to change the reality without loosing touch with the objects.

Jacks
are metal, hard and cold. So I thought it would be interesting to make them out of a material
that was soft and warm. The balls are shiny and smooth so they became fabric and paper; warm/soft and smooth/hard. Then it's deciding which
details to include or add and which to leave out, and so forth.

Although I thought the photographer who created the composition of the
inspiration image did it nicely I needed to arrange the elements into
my own composition and one that would work well in the calendar format, which is
horizontal; 8.5x11, rather than square.

I'm still in a retro mood. And Wonder Bread is certainly a retro icon. Although it is still on shelves today, I remember it from childhood in the 1950s. It goes back a bit further though and actually made its debut on May 21, 1921; 97 years and 3 days ago.

When I began working on the idea for this print I didn't realize that my timing aligned with a Wonder Bread anniversary. Nor did I realize that the colorful dots on the packaging represented the many colorful balloons at the Indianapolis Speedway International balloon race that year or that the name Wonder was inspired by the wonder of that spectacle.

My best friend even had a cotton shift sporting a fun Wonder Bread print on white fabric. (Shift: a retro garment defined as "a short dress that hangs straight down from the shoulders with clean, simple lines that hangs loosely from the body without a fitted cut.")

Looking around online today I see the Wonder Bread balloon color pattern on all sorts of products. I'm guessing the commercial artist, Drew Miller, who created the logo for the VP of the bakery at the time, Elmer Cline, had no idea how iconic it would become.
Fresh As Pears was begun on an enjoyable Christmas afternoon. Dear friends in Washington had sent a gift that included a box of beautiful and delicious fresh pears, hence the title. sandra coreyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03152331530499316809noreply@blogger.com0
