Here is the finished Large Folk Art Hotel del Coronado.  (Previous post shows the original small version)  Subtle changes were made to the composition in order for it to carry this much enlargement (from 6x6 to 30x30)   I am relieved to have finished it in time for customer’s hoped-for Christmas deadline!  This is where she and her husband were married and is an anniversary gift for him.   

Custom Painting Projects

This is a picture of 6"x6" miniscape Little Folk Art Hotel del Coronado from 2016.  The customer who ordered the large version of miniscape Little Folk Art Hotel La Valencia ordered a large version of this 6"x6" painting as well.  There is a hoped for deadline of Christmas this time and I will be merrily working to meet it! 

Large Folk Art La Valencia Hotel -SOLD

Update to last week's post below: Here's how the 36x36" Hotel La Valencia turned out.  The customer was very happy and took it home on Monday. 

Thought I would post a few updates.

Will Wonders never cease... My little Wonder Bread art print from 2018, was selected to be a part of Wonder Bread Canada's 2023 fall ad campaign, It Starts with Wonder.  Although I won't be able to view it here in the U.S. , I like knowing my little print is off on this adventure.  The ad agency for the campaign contacted me out of the blue, something that would not have happened to me prior to the age of the internet.

And an Etsy customer requested I make a 36x36" version of my 6x6" painting Little Folk Art La Valencia! (original 6" version seen here)  I've needed to rebuild my painting-on-large-canvases muscles for this one. 

And another requested an even further miniaturized, framed print of the already diminutive 6x6" Little Folk Art Hotel del Coronado painting for her daughter's birthday, with a rather short turnaround.  I am still working on the large painting but tonight I finished the 3x3" mini mini framed print.

I hesitate to accept custom orders because they are full of surprises and take longer than I estimate and are therefore more costly to me.  But I have enjoyed these opportunities and doing something special for a customer to make them happy.

I'm kind of in love with moonstone succulent plants, among many others.  They have so much personality and variety.  Naturally I wanted to abstract it.  I did try to make it have at least a semblance to the actual plant.  They remind me of my mom, who had a brave little patch of them in the front of her home and who brought one to me one day since I was so fond of hers.

As with Artichoke, I experimented with a number of versions of the pink Pincushion Protea plant before deciding on the looser, simplified version of it and taking heart in Picasso's words: "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child."!   And might I add it makes me happy to look at it.

Jolly Time Popcorn is made by The American Pop Corn Company, a family-owned popcorn producer founded in 1914.  It is the oldest popcorn company in the United States and Jolly Time is its only brand.

This is a small version of the large fabric wall hanging of the same title that I made in the 1970s.  It was suggested I make a painted version of some of those wall hangings and this is the third one.

In other news, I  "wrote" and "published" a very small "book" through which I hope the uplifting beauty of the Scottish Isles and some amusing animals offer a wee refuge in times of stress.    

The reason for the quotes around those words and that I'm smiling just a bit, is because there is very little actual writing,  and the book is so small it probably only narrowly counts as a book.  It is slowly appearing,  in 3 formats, on book sites worldwide!   Although I have yet to see it in person, it is rather exciting, and only possible through field-leveling technology of today's world.

Artichoke

I like playing with how far I can push an object away from its recognizable reality without loosing its connection to what it is.  For Artichoke it was simplifying its form and pushing its colors into turquoises.  

Before I settled on this version I made many studies, from realistic to more simplified and from more accurate color portrayals to various unusual color schemes.   In the end I came back to this simplified one, which was also the first version.

In the process of studying them,  I also became intrigued with artichoke plants; how their petals are arranged and the way they balance their bulblike shapes on the tops of a comparatively narrow-looking stems.   I believe they are a variety of thistle and in the aster family.

What can be said about cabbages?   They are nutritious cooked or raw, a friend to soups and a comforting side dish on chilly fall or winter evenings.   Aside from those important features, they are colorful, personable and lend themselves to folk art portraiture.     They are also fun to paint and never complain about sitting still.
