Art As Comfort Food

I opened my new Etsy Shop,  Art as Comfort Food.  New, I should say, in that I finally stocked and opened it.    It's been a learning process but also fun and I even learned to create shop departments for different categories of items, i.e. calendars, prints, original art etc.

Are you up for solving a puzzle?  Before I give the title of this miniscape I thought I'd see whether you can guess where it is.  Keeping in mind the miniscapes bring far things near and may leave out

near things entirely.     While I do try to capture the personality of a place, they are not meant to be literal representations. 

Spoiler alert November 21, 2015:  The answer is Mendocino.  Some of you actually guessed this!  And now the title has been changed to reflect where it is.

Back to one of my favorite painting subjects.   With all its varieties, shapes and colors, fruit lends itself to such fun "decorative interpretation" making it a special joy to paint.  (I would still say it's folk art and I still say folk art is somewhat abstract.)  I'm about halfway through a new painting of fruit, of sorts,  and then possibly a new mini-scape.

Returning to last week's painting, The Kitty Tree, here are some of the thoughts sent in by people imagining what the little bird might be thinking:

"I'd like to chase a cat" included from last post.
"I'd better get the heck out of here"
"I sure am glad I can fly in case they come down from there."  
"What's wrong with this picture"  
"Considering calling the fire department to get 5 cats out of the tree"
"Can I play too?"
"Well,  you may have taken over the tree but you still can't fly"
"Cats wish they were birds"

I asked my mother what she imagined the little bird was thinking.  She answered: "I'd like to chase a cat."  I'm curious to hear what you think the little bird might be thinking.

Meanwhile, I have also been working on another collage of a tea vignette.  Therefor I have hopes it won't be another 9 months before I post the next picture!

This mini-scape folk art painting depicts a of view from the sea toward historic La Valencia hotel and Scripps Park, La Jolla, California. 

Here is the inspiration photo, but I also used Google maps.  (Even though I don't keep to realism in the painting, I do like to know what the reality of the image is before I completely alter it!)

Little Folk Art Roller Coaster-Not For Sale

View toward Mission Bay and Beach and historic Belmont Park's, wooden roller coaster (The Big Dipper), built in 1925.  On July 4, 1990, a ceremony was held to officially recognize the Dipper as a National Historical Monument.

The inspiration for this painting is this great photo I saw online. 

It is a bit blurry but I could see enough to want to re-imagine it as a little folk art painting.  If you click on the photo to enlarge it , you can see the red roofs and roller coaster in the background and the West Mission Bay Drive bridge in the center foreground.

It's been awhile since I've posted a folk art miniscape.  This little one depicts the new Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego, with a view toward Coronado Island and eastward to San Diego's mountains.

Red is a tricky oil color to work with and even trickier to photograph.  So I will provide a little narration.  The reds in Valentine consist of warm and cool tones, from deep blue-red to orange-red, darker and lighter red shades along with chartreuse, dark ultramarine and light blues.

One of my favorite things about living on the canyon is seeing how the morning sunlight plays on the leaves of the eucalyptus trees that fill it.  It turns the leaves a bright, almost iridescent, translucent, green like bright green icicles.
